Basic Poker rules

There are many different forms of Poker, each having variations that offer a twist to original poker.  Most forms of Poker however share the basic principals and rules.  Once the basic Poker rules are understood it is easier to adapt to each new form.  To begin, Poker uses a normal deck of 52 cards.  The only exception to this is where Jokers are included as “wild cards”.  The cards are valued from highest to lowest as follows: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 (lots of numbers as in online keno). The Ace is usually the highest card, with exception in some games where it is considered the lowest.  As with most card games, there are 4 suites, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades.

Before Poker can begin a dealer must be chosen.  To participate at a online casino poker table, each player needs to place money in the pot.  This is referred to as the Anti.  The amount of the Anti is determined before the game begins.  The dealer is in charge of shuffling the cards and dealing the correct amount to each player (the amount of cards can vary amongst each Poker variation).  The cards may be dealt face up, or face down again depending upon the Poker variation.  The person that is sitting beside the dealer is the first person that has control of the poker table after looking at their cards.  In online casino games where a dealer is provided, there is usually a button placed in front of a player to represent who is acting as dealer in that hand.  Once the hand is over, the button then moves to the next player in rotation.  In turn each person has 5 choices to choose from:

Check – When there is no bet other than the initial Anti and you wish to continue with the hand.

Bet – Place an initial bet adding money to the pot.  In order to continue playing each player must match the bet of everyone else.

Raise – When you match the bet of previous players and add an additional amount to the bet.

Call – Match the current bet.

Fold – When your hand has low probability and you want to throw your hand in and give up your current bet.

Each player takes a turn making their decision until all bets are matched and the money is in the pot from each player.

Depending on the version of Poker, there may be additional cards dealt that may better odds of getting a better hand, while in other versions you look to see who has the best Poker hand.

To determine who has the greatest hand, you can refer to the chart below.  Most forms of Poker follow this value system, which makes it a useful chart to memorize.

Royal Flush:  Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 all in the same suite.  Royal Flush is the best hand you can get in Poker.

Straight Flush: When 5 cards are in a run in sequence.  Ie: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack.  This is the second best hand that can only be beaten by a Royal Flush or a Straight Flush with a higher card.  In Straights, the Ace may be used to represent a value of 1 or above the King giving some more flexibility.

Four of a Kind:  Any four cards of equal value, ie 4 4’s or 4 8’s.  The only hand more favorable than a Royal Flush is four Aces’.

Full House:  This is when you have 3 cards of the same value and 2 other cards of equal value but different than the first 3.  Ie 3 jacks and 2 4’s or 3 Queens and 2 Kings.

Flush: This is when you have any 5 cards that all match the same suite.  The order of the flush doesn’t matter, and the cards do not have to be in sequence.  Ie: 2, 5, 7, Queen, King all of which are Hearts.

Straight:  This is when 5 cards are in a sequence, like the Straight Flush, however the cards do not need to be all in the same suite.  Ie: 3 of hearts, 4 of clubs, 5 of clubs, 6 of hearts, 7 of spades.

Three of a kind: This is where a player has 3 cards of the same value.  Ie: 3 4’s or 3 Kings Etc.

Two Pairs:  This is where a player has two sets of cards that match.  Ie 2 4’s and 2 Ace’, or 2 Queens and 2 Kings.

Pair: This is when a player has two cards of the same value.  Ie 2 Aces, or 2 Kings Etc.

High Card: This is when no player has any of the above combinations the last way to determine a winner is to see who has the highest card in their hand.

Rules of Poker can vary from game to game, however these basic rules usually are the basis of every Poker game and once understood it can be easier adapting to each new form of Poker.

Steer clear of gambling fallacy

Gambling is a curious mix of luck, skill and patience, knowing and playing the odds, knowing when and how to lose and much more besides.  The idea that gambling can be boiled down into an easy formula is bordering on the absurd.  A person could go into a casino or log-on to an online casino on successive days, gambling exactly the same way and return with wildly different results.  Sometimes one of the harshest lessons to learn about gambling is that at times you are up and others you are down.

Try not to be lured by the fallacy that short-term outcomes have the same frequency as long term ones.  You are not playing against a thinking creature that will use its previous experience to try and outwit you.  A ball bouncing in a roulette wheel has no memory of what it did previously.  If you are at a roulette table and the ball lands on black a number of times successively, it does not routinely imply that the next time the wheel is spun that the ball will again land in black.  The odds of it landing in black again are somewhere around the 50% mark (a little less because of the zero) on the wheel.

Gambling is difficult enough, without falling into a trap such as this, trying to second guess (based on faulty logic) the bounce of the roulette ball or whatever is appropriate to the game that you are playing.

Budgeting – learn the ropes in a free casino

I know just how exciting it can be when caught up with playing in an internet casino or playing poker online; the thrill of gambling, the excitement of being an opponent to so many people from across the globe and the comfort of playing in your own home.  So it might seem strange that such a crucial aspect of gambling can sometimes be overlooked because naturally people are a little impatient to get the ball rolling.  I am referring to how to budget your money properly and although it might seem a strange thing to say, playing in a free casino could help you out.

Surely the point of a free casino is that you don’t play with any money, I can hear you asking.  True, but you are given virtual money to play with and this is where it can be such a good idea to gamble in a consistent and reasonable way, as if it were your own money.  One of the main criticisms of ‘gambling’ in a free casino is that some people feel that in order to act rationally whilst playing, it only works to use your own money.  That is not an option in a free casino, but the lessons that you draw from your game play there can be very instructive and help you a great deal, if and when you make the jump to a paying casino.

Don’t discount the valuable budgeting lessons that you can learn from playing in a free casino.

A quick guide to Casino Bonus Opportunities

The appearance of casino bonus opportunities is one of the key differences between physical casinos and those on the internet.  Their appearance was conceived by online casinos, wishing to be as competitive as possible and more than that to be noticed by the ever-increasing number of online gamers.  The idea behind it is very simple and works much like a store loyalty card: commit a person to membership of your gaming site and then through a series of inducements and dangling a casino bonus two, ensure their loyalty over a long period of time.  It was a tactic that caught on quickly and the situation now is that any online casino worth its weight in virtual chips is cashing in – offering players any number of opportunities to make their membership really worthwhile.

Each website is different and will therefore entice players with an alternative casino bonus.  There is an enormous range of bonuses being offered; probably as many as there are gaming websites.  However, what is true for nearly all sites offering these benefits, is that the gamer will have to ‘earn’ their bonus in some way; logging on at a specific time, adding to their online bank account by a set amount, or by some other means.

There are so many opportunities out there to win a casino bonus and all you have to do, is pick your website(s) and watch those bonuses rolling in.

How to Signal Your Next Move in Casino Blackjack

In casino Blackjack, all players need to signal their next move by performing a specific hand gesture over their cards. Although it seems strange, casinos rely on these signals for insurance purposes. Think of them as extra proof. If, for example, a player says “Hit” and busts, he can claim that he told the dealer to “Split” and demand that his original bet be returned. Without the video camera proof that the player signaled “Hit” over his cards, the casino can’t prove that their dealer acted correctly. Hand signals are thus an important part of casino Blackjack that help clarify players’ intentions.

Here’s what you need to know to help you signal your next moves in casino Blackjack.

To signal a Hit, drag your cards along the table and then tap the table with one finger.

To signal a Split, hold up two fingers and place an identical pile of chips next to your original bet.

To Stand, place your cards under your chip pile and hold up your palm to signal the dealer that you’re sticking with your total.

To Double Down, hold up one finger and set a new pile of chips next to your original bet. The two piles should have the same amount. (Note that this signal looks similar to the Split signal – be careful not to confuse them.)

The next time you’re at the tables, play like a casino Blackjack pro by using these hand motions.

Different Online Poker games

The online Poker industry is as diverse as the possibilities for downloading Poker software on the internet are. With millions of Poker sites and Poker variations, the online platform represents the best place to explore and experience this classic of casino card games. Different online Poker games like Texas Hold’em, Omaha, or 7 Studs are generally offered by most brands as a way to expand their offerings and members’ choice range. A further option is given to the players by some online Poker brands by adding a Hi/Lo variant of the most common Poker variations.

Very specific, particular rules apply to each and every one of the Poker variations, and logically, such rules must be learned by the player in order to guarantee his/her optimal performance during the game and increase his/her possibilities of winning. So before setting off to play different online Poker games, make sure you read the rules of each variation carefully and understand them; observing a game or two of the particular variant you have decided to play is also highly recommended, specially if your goal is to play for real money later on.

The rules for the different online Poker games present in a given site will be included in one, or a few of the following sections: how to play, Poker school, or some times even within the software itself. Normally these sections will offer some diagrams or interactive visuals to facilitate the understanding of the concepts explained. Once you have read them and understood them playing will become more fun, logical and easy to master.

Thank you for joining the online Poker community and good luck!
